2009 Reading Challenges
The 1% Well Read Challenge is hosted by 1 more chapter. The goal is to read 1% of the books on the 1001 Books To Read Before You Die list. There are three options:
- Read 10 titles from the original list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
- Read 10 titles from the new list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
- Read 13 titles from the combined list (of almost 1300 titles) from March 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010.
To sign up for this challenge and find a list of the 1001 Books To Read Before You Die, go here.
The A to Z Challenge options are as follows:
Option A: Read authors A to Z. Commit to reading 26 books theoretically speaking.
Option B: Read titles A to Z. Commit to reading 26 books theoretically speaking.
Option C: Read both authors A to Z and titles A to Z (52 books)
Option D: Read internationally A to Z (books representing 26 different countries) (The books could be from international authors (writers from that country); however, it's fine if a book is only set in that country. If need be, instead of countries one could use cities, states, regions, etc. The idea is to use proper place names. If you'd like you could even use a few fictional countries.)
Option E: Read 26 Alphabet books. Embrace your inner child and go visit the children's section!
Overlaps are allowed. Go here to sign up!
The Chunkster Challenge is a challenge to read books 450 pages or longer. Here are the details:
- A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature (fiction or nonfiction).
- If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more.
- No Audio books in the chunkster.
- You may start any time after signing up. You must complete your reads before or on Nov 15th.
- Short Stories and Essay collections will not be counted.
- Books may crossover with other challenges (see option 4 for a collaborative effort with TBR challenge)
- Only option 4 requires that you make a set list of books to complete the challenge
Those are the basics. Here are your options:
*The Chubby Chunkster - this option is for the reader who has a large tome or two to read, but really doesn't want to commit to more than that. Two books is all you need to finish this challenge.
*Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? - this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to 3-5 Chunksters over the next ten months.
*Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control Chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 6 or more Chunksters OR three tomes of 750 pages or more. You know you want to.....go on and give in to your cravings.
And lastly, in an intriguing collaboration with the wildly popular Miz B of the TBR Challenge we have:
*Too Big To Ignore Anymore- this option is for those Chunksters on your TBR list. You may select any number of books over 450 pages but you must LIST THEM to complete the challenge and they must be on your TBR list as well.

The Pub Challenge. Here are the 2009 rules:
- Read a minimum of 9 books first published in 2009. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2009, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2008, and then published in the USA in 2009, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2009. Any questions on what qualifies? Just leave a comment here, and I’ll respond with the answer.
- No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
- At least 5 titles must be fiction.
- Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
- You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.
The Fall Into Reading Challenge hosted by Callapidder Days. Essentially, Fall Into Reading 2009 is a fun, low-pressure reading challenge open to anyone and everyone. It will take place September 2nd-December 20th (which, not surprisingly, is the fall of 2009).
To participate, here’s what you need to do:
- Create a list of some books you’d like to read or finish this fall. This is the only real requirement for participating in the challenge.
- Feel free to set some additional reading goals (such as reading to your kids two hours per week, getting through your pile of magazines, etc.). However, this is not required; setting additional goals is completely optional.
- Write a blog post that includes the list of books you want to read (and any additional goals you’ve set), and get ready to post it on your blog on September 22nd.
- Visit Callapidder Days on September 22nd to sign up for the challenge.
- Read! Work on your goals throughout Fall 2009.
- Report your results. Write another blog post in December to let everyone know how you did.
- Have fun! Visit other participants to see what they’re reading. Write reviews if you’re so inclined. But most of all, enjoy your fall reading!
